Ida Curriculum Council Minutes for October 10, 2024

  1. District
    • Brief introductions were shared by each member.
    • The purpose of Curriculum Council along with the curriculum process was shared and reviewed.
      • A MICIP/Strategic Plan update was given. A summary of the strategic plan was shared and the main goals the district will focus on for this year were explained.
      • Jean Foster hosts monthly brainstorm meetings to network with PE/Health teachers. The next one is scheduled for October 22nd at 3pm via Zoom. Please contact Jean Foster from the ISD for the virtual meeting link if you are interested.
      • Mental Health Roundtable has an upcoming meeting in November at the ISD. The main focus of this meeting will be on grief. When the date is confirmed, it will be shared out.
      • Give a Kid a Christmas planning meeting was held. The students, staff, and community play an integral part in having this program be so successful for some of our families.
      • A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Monday, October 14th at 5pm for Jasmin Torres Drive. Refreshments will be served in the Elementary School Multipurpose Room following the ribbon cutting.
  2. K-12 Communications: High School Topics
    • Leadership update was given by Amy Strimpel as she is subbing for Mrs. Alexander at this time. The year is off to a busy start with students in various groups based on initiatives such as positivity, kindness, school engagement/spirit, and SPLT. Students hosted a powderpuff game, helped with the fall festival, collected blue jeans to make toys for the humane society, help with lunches at the elementary school, help with college month locker signs, sell donuts before school, and are preparing for operation Christmas child. More ideas and activities will be implemented throughout the year.
      • Curriculum/Assessment Changes/Needs and/or Updates
        1. Delta Math has been renewed for the math department
        2. Counselor Update - October is College Month; counselors are working with students to apply to various colleges and complete their FAFSA forms. Locker signs are being put on student lockers and workshops are being held to assist students with college applications. October 24th is college application day and there will be a senior raffle at the beginning of November. The counselors hosted coffee with the counselors to discuss various topics around college and financial aid, a Bridges peer to peer workshop is taking place this afternoon, ASVAB testing will be at the beginning of November, and there will be a Just Build It field trip to EMU to focus on the trades next week.
        3. Discussion was held about the approved electives from the past two years. They are being fit into the master schedule when possible and when there is enough student interest. There has been positive feedback from the offerings including the floral design class and transition to college mathematics.
          • The agriculture class will be having their broiler chicken sale in the coming weeks.
            • The Monroe County Road Commission selected Ida to paint one of their snowplows. The high school art classes will be designing and painting this plow in the coming weeks.
  3. K-12 Communications: Middle School Topics
    • Curriculum/Assessment Changes/Needs and/or Updates
      1. Big Ideas Math was piloted in 6th-8th grade math classes last year and has been continued into the beginning of this year. The department is monitoring student growth, feedback, and data on local and state assessments before making a recommendation on adoption.
      2. Exact Path was used last year in summer school and in skills classes. Students have been making growth and closing the achievement gap with lessons and assignments that are customized to their learning. The program will continue to be used in skills classes this year.
      3. Counselor Update – Student spotlight bulletin board is up and running, student council is hosting a grade level pumpkin decorating contest for PRIDE points, there will be a Halloween dress up day fundraiser, Red Ribbon Week will be the week of October 21st, and each month they are celebrating student birthdays with donuts.
      4. Many activities are taking place; there was an OK2SAY presentation this week, after school clubs and tutoring started, and a new student support provider started and is working with students on academics and developing hard and soft skills.
      5. Mr. Potter has been working on organizing athletic supplies. He is also checking in with students for academic and behavioral concerns.
      6. Curriculum/Assessment Changes/Needs and/or Updates
        1. A new reading program will be adopted for the 2025-2026 school year and sample programs have arrived. Program overview webinars will be shared with staff to start the review process and narrow down choices.
        2. 3rd Grade Reading Law Compliance Letter and IRIPs will be going home in the next few days. All 1st-3rd grade students will receive a letter informing parents about the law.
        3. Ms. Young is starting the girls on the run club back up. She is also teaching students about internet safety.
          • Jim Basketball Jones hosted an assembly for students and staff. Everyone enjoyed the assembly.
            • There was a Principal Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting last week and there will be a PTA meeting next week.
            • Feedback was shared about the various high school groups and classes that help out in the elementary school. Teachers and students are very appreciative of the collaboration.
            • Parent Group update was shared by Sara Batson and Jessica Kisonas. Many special events are coming up such as a Trunk or Treat, Book Fairs at both the elementary and middle school, Chick-fil-A fundraiser, skate night, birthday grams, popcorn Fridays, election event for pj vs. stuffie day, and various spirit days in the coming months.
            • Manufacturing Day was October 3rd for 8th grade students. Students had a very positive experience and got to see firsthand the manufacturing jobs at Tailor Welded Blanks and Premier Industries.
            • Knabusch Math and Science Center Field Trips are available through December. New winter/spring dates will be offered after Thanksgiving and again after the New Year.
            • MathCounts will be starting next week. Audrey Hamm and Melissa Raymond are organizing this team and will prepare students for their competition in February.
            • Quiz Bowl is starting soon. We currently need coaches for a 5th, 6th, and 7th grade team. If you or someone you know might be interested in coaching a team, please contact Audrey Hamm, Sarah Ash, or the Middle School Main Office. The county competition will be at the end of February or beginning of March.
            • You be the Chemist Challenge (5th-8th grade) will tentatively be on February 27th at the ISD for teams of 3-4 students. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
            • Monroe County Science Challenges for 3rd and 4th grade students will be back in the spring. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
  4. Assessment Updates
    • NWEA/STAR Reading, K-8 – fall testing is finished, spring 2024 and current fall data was shared with the group.
    • Spring state testing data was shared and reviewed with the group. Building level teams looked at data and trends.
      • High School Testing:
        1. October 25th-optional PSAT/NMSQT test for 10th/11th grade students who signed up
  5. Professional Development Opportunities
    • Comments/feedback from August 27th and 28th PD
      • SCECHs have been submitted and teachers should have received an e-mail notifying them of the survey that has to be taken
        • Next PD Day is Friday, November 1st – Gerry Brooks will be the morning presenter and details about the day will be shared in the next week
          • Special Populations Conference - October 15-16, 2024, in East Lansing
            • EdTech Conference: 5 Big Ideas in AI – November 4-December 20th, virtual asynchronous weekly sessions
            • MRALT Conference – November 12th from 9-3:00 p.m. at Washtenaw ISD (designed to increase collaboration and learning between general and special education math teachers)
              • MiMTSS Conference; Transforming Student Success Through MTSS – November 12-13th in Lansing
                • VR Prism training – November 19th from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at Monroe ISD; geared toward secondary math and science teachers
                  • Fall 2024 Continuous Improvement Conference – November 21st from 8:00-4:00 p.m. in Lansing
                  • Michigan Music Conference – January 23rd in Grand Rapids
